On President’s Day: A Poem

Pardon me a moment;

I’ve got something to say.

Shhh, honey, don’t interrupt.

Mommy’s talking;

Now, what was I saying? Oh, yes.

I want a woman president today!

I want a president who knows firsthand

How to maintain professionalism

On a conference call from home

While wiping a child’s runny nose.

Her decisions about healthcare will come

Straight from the hip.

I want a woman president today!

I want a president who has carried a child,

Which has left behind

An instinct to protect, and a connection

To all women’s children.

Her calculations of the real costs of war

Will come from deep inside.

I want a woman president today!

I want a president who believes in public education

While struggling with the moral dilemma

Of how to give her child the best education

When that public school isn’t it.

Her creativity around education will come

From some hard-earned lessons.

I want a woman president today!

I want a president

Who has balanced the family budget

While balancing

Her career

The healthy meals

The dentist appointments

The carpool

The groceries

The childcare

The date night

The homework

The laundry

The bills

The piano practice

The birthday party

And the crying child.

Her agenda to balance the national budget will come

From just another day at the Oval Office.

I want a woman president today!

I want a woman who knows that

Women’s rights are human rights.

I want to tell my son

That he can be anything he wants to be

When he grows up:

President,

Or First Gentleman.

I want to tell my daughters

That they can be anything they want to be

When they grow up,

Like my parents told me.

Only I want to point to

The most influential country in the world

As proof.

I want a woman president today!
